Planning when to visit Rome? This month-by-month guide explains what Rome is like throughout the year, including crowds, prices, religious holidays, festivals, weather, museums, outdoor dining, and seasonal events.

January

Best for: Lower prices, museums, quieter sightseeing, religious traditions

January is one of the quietest months in Rome. Christmas decorations remain until Epiphany (6 January), when the tradition of La Befana is celebrated. Around Piazza Navona, seasonal stalls, sweets, and family events create a festive atmosphere. Hotel prices are usually lower, queues are shorter, and famous sites such as the Colosseum and Vatican Museums are easier to visit.

February

Best for: Fewer crowds, local atmosphere, winter city breaks

February remains relatively quiet and is often one of the cheapest months to visit Rome. If Carnevale falls during the month, visitors may encounter costumed parades, performances, and celebrations in parts of the city. Cooler weather makes museums, churches, food tours, and historic neighbourhoods particularly enjoyable.

March

Best for: Early spring, parks, outdoor sightseeing

Spring begins to arrive. Trees and gardens start blooming, temperatures become more comfortable, and outdoor cafes begin filling again. Depending on the year, the Rome Marathon usually takes place in March, bringing runners from around the world through many of the city's most famous landmarks and creating a lively atmosphere across the centre.

April

Best for: Spring weather, Easter celebrations, history enthusiasts

April is one of Rome's most beautiful months. Easter can transform the city, especially around Vatican City, where papal ceremonies attract visitors from around the world. On 21 April, Rome celebrates Natale di Roma, the traditional birthday of the city, with Roman legion reenactments, historical parades, ancient costumes, and cultural events inspired by Ancient Rome. Pleasant temperatures and longer days make it ideal for exploring archaeological sites and historic neighbourhoods.

May

Best for: Outdoor dining, gardens, long sightseeing days

Many locals consider May one of the best months to enjoy Rome. Parks, piazzas, and archaeological sites are pleasant to explore before summer heat arrives. Outdoor concerts, cultural events, flower displays, and evening festivals become more common throughout the city, while gardens and public spaces are at their most colourful.

June

Best for: Festivals, long evenings, outdoor events

2 June (Republic Day) brings military ceremonies and celebrations, while 29 June (Saints Peter and Paul Day) honours Rome's patron saints with religious processions, concerts, and special events around churches and Vatican areas. June also marks the beginning of Estate Romana, a city-wide programme of outdoor cinema, theatre, exhibitions, live music, and cultural events. Music lovers can also enjoy the start of Rock in Roma and Roma Summer Fest.

July

Best for: Nightlife, music festivals, summer atmosphere

July is hot, but Rome comes alive after sunset. Rock in Roma hosts major international and Italian artists across rock, pop, indie, rap, and electronic music. At the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Roma Summer Fest brings international musicians, orchestras, jazz performers, and contemporary artists to the city. Across Rome, Estate Romana fills parks, piazzas, riversides, and historic spaces with outdoor cinema screenings, theatre performances, exhibitions, and cultural events. Jazz lovers may also enjoy performances connected to the Casa del Jazz Summer Festival.

August

Best for: Summer events, fewer locals, late-night city atmosphere

August is the hottest month. Many Romans leave the city for holidays, especially around Ferragosto (15 August), one of Italy's most important summer celebrations. Tourist attractions remain open, but some smaller local businesses may close temporarily. Summer festivals continue throughout the city, including Rock in Roma, outdoor concerts, riverside events, and the final weeks of many Estate Romana programmes.

September

Best for: Warm weather without peak summer heat

Many travellers consider September the ideal balance. Temperatures remain pleasant, outdoor dining continues well into the evening, and the city regains its normal rhythm after the August holiday period. Roma Summer Fest and some Estate Romana events often continue into early September, making it a particularly good month for visitors who want both cultural events and comfortable sightseeing conditions.

October

Best for: Food lovers, walking, cultural events

October combines comfortable weather with fewer crowds than summer. It is one of the best months for walking tours, neighbourhood exploration, museums, and outdoor sightseeing. The annual Rome Film Fest attracts filmmakers, actors, directors, and cinema enthusiasts from around the world, bringing premieres, screenings, red-carpet events, and cultural programmes to the city. Autumn food festivals also begin appearing around Rome and the surrounding Lazio region.

November

Best for: Lower prices, museums, local life

November is quieter and often overlooked by visitors. All Saints' Day (1 November) is a public holiday, but the rest of the month generally sees fewer crowds. Cooler weather makes it ideal for exploring churches, galleries, restaurants, historic cafes, and indoor attractions. Accommodation prices are often lower than during peak season.

December

Best for: Christmas atmosphere, religious traditions, festive events

Rome takes on a different character during December. Christmas lights decorate major shopping streets such as Via del Corso, while nativity scenes appear throughout churches and public spaces. Christmas markets can be found in locations including Piazza Navona, famous for seasonal stalls, gifts, decorations, sweets, and traditional treats. 8 December (Immaculate Conception) traditionally marks the beginning of many Christmas celebrations, while St. Peter's Square hosts the unveiling of the Vatican Christmas tree and nativity scene. Throughout the month, visitors can enjoy Christmas concerts, festive events, seasonal food, and one of the most atmospheric periods of the year in the city.
