From the Algarve's golden coves to wild Atlantic shores, these are some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal for scenery, swimming, sunsets and slow coastal days.

Portugal’s coastline is one of Europe’s great travel pleasures: Atlantic cliffs, small coves, broad surf beaches and island shores that feel far from the usual holiday rush.

The Algarve is famous for honey-coloured rock formations and calm swimming spots, but some of the country’s most memorable beaches sit farther north, where wind, waves and open horizons shape a wilder mood.

1. Praia da Marinha

Often named among the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches, Praia da Marinha is known for limestone arches, clear water and golden cliffs. Visit early or late in the day for softer light and fewer crowds.

2. Praia do Camilo

Close to Lagos, Praia do Camilo is reached by a wooden staircase descending between cliffs. It is small, photogenic and best enjoyed outside the busiest hours.

3. Praia da Adraga

North of Lisbon, Praia da Adraga feels more dramatic than polished. Dark rocks, Atlantic surf and a windswept setting make it one of the most atmospheric beaches near Sintra.

4. Praia da Comporta

Comporta is long, pale and elegant, with dunes, rice fields nearby and a quieter mood than many southern resorts. It suits long walks, lunches by the sea and slow summer afternoons.

5. Praia do Guincho

Near Cascais, Guincho is a wide Atlantic beach loved by surfers and windsurfers. It is not always gentle for swimming, but the scenery is unforgettable.

6. Praia da Falésia

Backed by red and ochre cliffs, Praia da Falésia stretches for kilometres along the Algarve. It is one of the best beaches for walking at sunset.

7. Praia de Odeceixe

At the border of the Algarve and Alentejo, Odeceixe sits where river and ocean meet. It has a relaxed village feel and beautiful views from the cliffs above.

8. Praia do Amado

On the Costa Vicentina, Praia do Amado is a favourite for surfers. The landscape is rugged, open and less developed than the central Algarve.

9. Praia de Porto Santo

Porto Santo, near Madeira, offers a long sweep of golden sand and clear water. It feels different from mainland Portugal, with a softer island rhythm.

10. Praia de Santa Bárbara

In the Azores, Santa Bárbara is a dark volcanic beach framed by green hills and Atlantic waves. It is ideal for travellers who want nature more than resort polish.

How to Choose

For classic Algarve beauty, choose Praia da Marinha or Praia do Camilo. For surf and wild scenery, head to Guincho, Amado or Santa Bárbara. For a quieter, more elegant escape, Comporta is hard to beat.
