Uganda
East Africa / Source of the Nile
The Nile begins here, sliding out of Lake Victoria without ceremony, as if leaving were the most natural thing. Uganda is like that - extraordinary things happening plainly. Bwindi's mountain gorillas. The shoebill standing motionless in a papyrus swamp like a creature from a Borges story. Kampala's hills at dusk, loud with boda-bodas and evening light. It is chronically underestimated, which suits the people there just fine.
Our guide is being written from the ground up, with the time this place deserves.
We are still gathering the notes that make a guide worth keeping: forest permits, Kampala's rooftop bars, river lodges and the dishes that make Ugandan cooking one of the continent's best-kept secrets.
Guide in progress - notes are being gathered into a fuller country guide.
