South Sudan

East Africa / The New Country

South Sudan became the world's newest country in 2011, and the years since have been defined more by conflict than by the promise of that independence. The Sudd - one of the world's largest wetlands - lies at its heart, a papyrus swamp the size of England through which the Nile moves slowly and the wildlife moves in numbers that were, before the war, extraordinary. The country's potential is real and so is its current situation, and this guide will not separate the two.

Travel advisory South Sudan carries significant security risks. Check current conditions before planning travel.

We are still gathering the notes that make a guide worth keeping - and waiting for the moment when keeping them becomes something we can share.
