Lesotho
Southern Africa / The Kingdom in the Sky
Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa and sits entirely above 1,400 metres - the only country in the world with that distinction. Its highlands go higher still, to passes that snow in winter and in summer turn green in a way that surprises everyone who arrives expecting southern Africa's usual palette. The Basotho people move through this landscape on horseback, wrapped in the blankets that are the national garment, and the sight of a rider on a ridge against a high-altitude sky is not something that leaves you quickly.
Our guide is being written from the ground up, with the time this place deserves.
We are still gathering the notes that make a guide worth keeping: pony trekking routes, highland lodge stays, Sani Pass timings and the village guesthouses where the blanket tradition comes with a story attached.
Guide in progress - notes are being gathered into a fuller country guide.
